The Plan

We’ll pick you up from your hotel early in the morning in a private van, and travel through the Andes Mountains. After about 3 hours, we will have breakfast in Paucartambo. The trip will continue into the Cloud Forest, where the scenery and climate change quickly. In the Cloud Forest, we will stop and look for wild animals like monkeys and birds, including the bright-red Andean Cock of the Rock. We will descend into the Low Jungle, and arrive at our first lodge, Pona lodge.

We’ll start the day with breakfast at our lodge,  getting on the road early to make the most of the day. We’ll visit Machu Wasi lake, where you’ll cruise on a balsa raft and see exotic-looking Hoatizon birds, among others.  We’ll spend the day enjoying the journey in the jungle, looking for animals and birds alog the way. In the afternoon, we’ll arrive to Nuevo Eden, and our very own bungalow, La Casa Escondida. You’ll have some time to rest and enjoy the beautiful house before dinner.

We’ll have breakfast early in the morning and prepare for a day of exploring. Your guide will lead you on a nature hike, spending a few exploring the primary forest, learning about medicinal plants, and more. Lunch will be waiting for you in the Bungalow after your hike, and you’ll have some time to relax. In the afternoon, we will go to the Camouflage House, where we will spend the night. We will bring dinner in tupperwares with us, and take turns watching for tapirs and other animals. You’ll sleep in a sleeping bag, be given a mosquito net, and have a boxed dinner while enjoying the darkness and sounds of the jungle.

*About the Camouflage house:  located in a clay lick where animals visit through the night. It’s a simple shelter about 4 meters tall with a roof, and you’ll use the “bush toilet” as needed. Not exactly camping, this experience gives you an opportunity to sleep and relax very close to nature, and unplug from your normal life for a night.

We’ll head back to the Bungalow early in the morning for breakfast and prepare to explore the jungle some more. We’ll visit a pond where we can catch the infamous piranhas for a photo opportunity. Your guide will continue to explain about the jungle, and the interrelation between plants and animals in this marvelous ecosystem. Later in the day, we will see where we grow cacao, bananas, and other crops.

Early in the morning, we’ll load into a boat and start the journey down river. We’ll travel for 4 or 5 hours on the High Madre de Dios river, searching for animals on the riverbanks like capybaras, caimans, turtles, and if we’re very lucky we can see the elusive Jaguar in this part of the Manu National Park. In the afternoon, we’ll visit a lake called White Lake where we’ll  search for giant river otters, caimans, see tons of birds. We’ll arrive at Blanquillo lodge late in the afternoon for a rest and dinner.

Very early in the morning, we’ll make our way to the spectacular Blanquillo Clay Lick, where we will get to see an abundance of macaws and parakeets having their breakfast at the clay lick.

As with any natural place, the animals’ activity will be based  on the weather. We only run this tour in the months of the year that have appropriate weather to give us the best chance to enjoy this wonderful place to it’s fullest.

After exploring Blanquillo, we’ll get back on the boat and head back upriver to the Pankotsi Lodge, run by a group of Shiepitari people, a group native to the Manu National Park. We’ll relax and have dinner at the lodge

In the morning, we’ll go on a short hike around the lodge to see what wildlife we can see in this beautiful place. Then, we’ll get on the boat, cross the river back to Nuevo Eden where our car will be waiting for us. We’ll get into the car, and drive for about 90 minutes to the village of Shintuya, which is a village that has some more Native architecture and culture. We’ll take a different boat from Shintuya, across the river, to an Aguas Calientes or natural hot spring. Here you can relax a bit and soak in the beautiful jungle surroundings and enjoy the nice hot water.  After our visit to the hot springs, we’ll head back to Shintuya on the boat, and continue the journey in the car, through the Kosnipata area, then spend our final night of this tour in the Pona Lodge.

After breakfast, we’ll head back to the cloud forest, where we will look for the Cock of the Rock, the bright red national bird of Peru. We’ll retrace our steps through the cloud forest, back into the Andes mountains, and you’ll be dropped off in Cusco for a nice dinner and hot shower. (please note the final dinner is not included in the price of the tour).
