A gravel road winds through the mountains and deep into the jungle. As on any road trip, there are great things to see along the way. From small towns to wild monkeys, this trip offers a great glimpse into life in the Peruvian jungle.
Travel in a private 4×4, looking for animals and stopping in small towns, eat fresh fruit straight off the tree at a family’s farm, swim in a small river, visit clay lick platform, nature hike, birdwatching, reforestation workshop
We’ll pick you up from your hotel early in the morning in a private van, and travel through the Andes Mountains. Breakfast is in the charming town of Paucartambo. You can enjoy a hot drink, eggs, pancakes, juice, and more. Breakfast isn’t included in the price of the tour. The trip will continue into the Cloud Forest, where the scenery and climate change quickly. In the Cloud Forest, there will be chances to explore and look for wild animals like monkeys and birds, including the bright-red Andean Cock of the Rock. In the late afternoon, we’ll arrive at Pona Lodge for dinner and some time to relax.
After breakfast, our journey continues into the jungle. Passing through the small towns of Patria and Pilcopata, there will be a chance to stop at a basic pharmacy or shop if needed. We’ll continue deep into the jungle by road, making some fun pit stops along the way. We’ll visit a small lake called Machu Wasi where we’ll search for “prehistoric” birds on a balsa raft, go for a swim in one of the fresh, clean rivers along the way, and more. A variety of animals live in the area, and we’ll continuously be on the lookout for them as we travel. We’ll have a picnic-style lunch along the way. Before dinner, we’ll arrive at the Jungle Bungalow in Nuevo Eden. After settling in, you’ll set out on your first hike to explore the jungle. As the sun sets and day turns to night, you’ll use flashlights to search for tarantulas, snakes, and frogs. A hearty dinner will be waiting for you in the Bungalow.
After breakfast in the bungalow, your guide will lead you on a nature hike, spending a few hours searching for monkeys, admiring giant trees, and learning about the rainforest. Lunch will be waiting for you in the Bungalow after your hike, and you’ll have some time to relax and swim in the swimming hole. In the afternoon, we’ll walk to see the local birds at their most active time of day, before heading out to visit the mammal clay lick. We’ll spend the night in the camouflage house to watch for tapirs and deer. You’ll sleep in a sleeping bag, be given a mosquito net, and have a boxed dinner while enjoying the darkness and sounds of the jungle.
We’ll head back to the Bungalow early in the morning for breakfast and prepare for a day of exploring the area. After breakfast, we’ll walk to the riverbanks where a boat will be waiting to take you on a trip on the Madre de Dios River. You’ll go on a short nature hike, looking for wildlife with your guide. Lunch will be waiting in the Bungalow after your boat trip. In the afternoon, we’ll have some time to learn about some “real life” in the jungle. Our family in Nuevo Eden are all farmers, and we’ll spend some time learning how to harvest bananas, papayas or yucca (whatever is in season,) as well as plant some trees as part of our reforestation efforts. We’ll have a special jungle-themed dinner to celebrate our last night in Nuevo Eden.
We’ll leave the Bungalow early in the morning, loading up our truck to travel back to Cusco. During this travel day, you’ll get to enjoy the views and variety of three distinct climates and ecosystems. We can make stops along the way as desired.
